"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind" (James 1:5-6).
I love this verse! Through many trials in my life I have stumbled upon this verse and found so much meaning. I am a very visual person with frequent use of imagery, and a fire to gain a deeper understanding of all things. So, through my vision and individual understanding of this verse, I have gained and continue to gain a wisdom I would love to share with you.
What is wisdom? In my years at UST studying Philosophy and Theology, I found a true and deep love for knowledge and wisdom. What I came to understand was, that through my many years of education there were few teachers and professors that were passionate about being a facilitator in their students gaining wisdom. With all learning experiences, we have a choice to make it into a memory, gained knowledge, or a greater wisdom. In my education there were many times that I memorized information just to get by. Just as one can say their going to do something, and then they do not follow through. One can also be given information on a topic but, never find it applicable in their life, or put it to use. Wisdom is when one gains a knowledge and then puts it into action; finds an applicable way to apply it in their life. So through the power of the Holy Spirit, one can receive their desired knowledge and be given the direction and opportunity to apply it in their life. Thus, gaining more wisdom.
Do you believe? Once we ask for such wisdom, me must be successful at surrendering to God and trusting that he will answer your prayer. This part is not easy. It is a life process of learning. It can be easier or more difficult for others. When one trust, they open their heart, mind, and ears to receiving what they asked for. God speaks to us through many ways and forms. We must believe, stay alert, be willing, and seek the truth.
The sea and the wind are so powerful. Both, have such a duality of being a blessing or destructive. For me, the ocean brings me peace and relaxation. Water is a part of life; it brings forth life. Yet, it can be deadly through rain, ice, flood, tsunami, and more. The wind can be a calm and smooth force. I enjoy a cool breeze and the sound of wind chimes. However, the wind too can be a deadly force through high speeds, hurricanes, tornadoes, and more.
In conclusion, our life is made up of trials and obstacles. We have a choice to run, face-up, or to ride the wave of change, resulting in a new found wisdom. Doubt can be good if it leads one to seek a greater knowledge. But if one doubts and does not seek, they can be easily swayed, destroyed, or spiral out-of-control. We must embrace the beauty of the sea, trust God, and seek good/truth in all trials of life. It is in our tribulations that we can walk out with a greater wisdom prevailing the odds.
"SEEK, SURRENDER, & SAIL."
